I thought the members of the forum might find this petition, sent from the citizens of Desoto County, Mississippi, to Governor John J. Pettus, of interest:

To his Excellency Gov. J. J. Pettus
Greeting:
We a portion of the citizens of Desoto County and surrounding country are forced to ask for aid in this our time of need. It is utterly impossible for us to plant and cultivate a crop this spring unless we have some guarantee of being protected. It is also useless for us to represent to you that the enemy of our section of country is dong amongst us. Whole neighborhoods have been stripped of every thing to live on – they have been robbed of their money, clothing, stock and negroes and the enemy are still making their advances farther south in our country. Maj. Blythe has not a force sufficient to check their raids among us. We wound recommend to your excellency the appointment of our friend, Capt. Jesse A. Forrest, brother of Genl. N.B. Forrest, to raise a regiment of cavalry as the Col. Of said regt. to be formed out of the militia. Boys and the remaining conscripts who are yet remaining in this section of country. Which regiment after it is raised we wish to confine its operations to the North Western part of the state.
We cannot raise bread and meat for our brave soldiers who are in the service of our country unless some steps are taken for our protection. Therefore our situation and condition are recommended, for your consideration. We have considerable quantity of provisions here where the enemy has not been with his iron foot of oppression which we would like to share with our soldiers.
