Period mandolin player?

There's no provenance with this, but it appears to be a mid-century tintype. I first thought in uniform but more likely European stage troupe garb. Mandolins were rare in the U.S., let alone army camps, during the Civil War, despite that for current CW bands they are a must. Mandolins were all bowl-back type at the time.Can't tell what's going on with his legs -- shriveled or amputated perhaps? Probably nothing, but if crippled music was one way to make a living.
