Pate succeed to command of the 5th Virginia Cavalry, after Thomas "Tex" Rosser was promoted.
He led the regiment at Yellow Tavern, where he was killed by a union bullet.

Stuart's and Pate's action at Yellow Tavern was a reconciliation of sorts. There was a long standing feud between these two officers stemming from a court martial of Pate in March of 1863. I'm sort of puzzled as to exactly just what happened or why there was a court martial to start with. I know it resulted in the death of John Pelham at Kelly's ford.Could someone help me out with the details.

Many thanks, I see now Rosser was involved too. It looks like Stuart testified at the hearing and when him and Pelham were returning Pelham was killed at Kelly's ford. It appears Rosser was the one who brought on the court martial.
