Volunteers needed to clean up Kentucky battlefields and historic sites
By Morgan Henry
March 14, 2019

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Volunteers throughout Kentucky are teaming up with the American Battlefield Trust to aid in the maintenance and restoration of 18 Bluegrass State battlefields and historic sites as part of Park Day, an annual nationwide, hands-on preservation event.

Park Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 2019, when Kentucky volunteers will be joined by thousands of fellow participants across the country in cleaning up and revitalizing 160 historic sites in 32 states. Activities are chiefly outdoor projects that range from raking leaves and collecting trash to painting and gardening. Volunteers will receive T-shirts, and some sites will provide lunch or refreshments. A local historian may also be on hand to talk about the unique role of the site in our national story. Starting times, and occasionally event dates, may vary at each site. Kentucky volunteers interested in participating in Park Day are encouraged to contact the individual sites listed below.

Park Day 2019 for the Shiloh National Military Park this year will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 8:30 am to remove trash and debris from the Civil War earthworks in Corinth. This is a necessary event and a great opportunity for those who have never visited this hidden gem of the park Service. Our @TomP and the staff at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center certainly could use our assistance and this is a wonderful opportunity to see the Corinth earthworks up close!!

Call 662-287-9273 to register in advance. Free t-shirts courtesy of the American Battlefield Trust will be provided to volunteers. We ask all volunteers to meet at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center at 8:30 am. Please wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Gloves are recommended.

Volunteers Needed For American Battlefield Trust Park Day At Chickamauga Battlefield On April 6
Wednesday, March 20, 2019

The National Park Service will partner on Saturday, April 6, with the American Battlefield Trust, formerly the Civil War Trust, to conduct a hands-on preservation event to help Civil War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812 battlefields and historic sites take on maintenance projects large and small. Volunteers across the country will answer their nation’s call to service as they provide assistance to these sites as part of Park Day, which will be celebrating its 23rd year with events in 32 states.

At Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, volunteers are needed to help paint cannon carriages throughout the park. Sign-up will start at 8:30 am in the lower parking lot of the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. Come dressed for outdoor work and wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and paint on. For safety reasons and due to the nature of the work, clothing should include long-sleeved shirts, long pants, tennis shoes or work boots. Gloves, brushes, paint, and other personal protective equipment will be provided.

For more information about Park Day at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, please contact Will Wilson, Volunteer Coordinator, (706) 866-9241 ext. 137; will_wilson@nps.gov).
