I know that paper cartridges used during the war came from packages of factory made ammunition.

My question is: Did units in the field have cartridge making capabilities? If so, is there an example when this capability saved the day?

Short answer is yes & no. early war there was a lot of chaotic attempts to get anything that would shoot into the hands of the troops, but by mid 62 arms were generally available as was ammunition.

But you can imagine the headache to any QM when a regiment has .54, .58, 69, .71, .71 and even .75 in the ranks. I'm sure tere was some field moulds used but I can't recall as I've ever run across a period account of it.
