President Buchanan also had a toy terrier named Punch. He actually belonged to Buchanan's niece, Harriet Lane who lived at the White House and served as the President's hostess. The tiny dog was given to Harriet by the British Consul. They state he was so tiny that " he might be placed under a punch bowl".

Punch and Lara the Newfoundland, Buchanan's other dog, must have been quite a sight together.

President Buchanan also had a pair of bald eagles. They were given to him by friends when he became president. They only stayed at the White House a short time. They were taken to Wheatland, the Buchanan estate and lived there on the front porch.
