I've done a thread a long while back on the history of Cleburne's Division. One of the keys to Cleburne's success as a brigade and division commander is his emphasis on accuracy and light infantry tactics. While in brigade command after Shiloh, he formed a company of dedicated skirmishers. When he was at Wartrace, he set up competitions to see what soldiers would recieve one of the 5 Whitworth Rifles his command was given. It seems that whatever skirmisher organization he had at brigade command, he tried to translate to division command.
However, I have read nothing in his biography regarding any further details on the organization of his original company of skirmishers; who served with it; if it ever had an appointed commander; if it still existed after he was promoted; etc. It seems that his divisional command merely did what every other division did, and left the deal of organizing skirmish lines to the brigades.
So...anyone got any info pertaining to this unit?
