On this date in history: The Confederates evacuate Richmond

6:56 a.m. EDT, April 2, 2013
On April 2, 1865, President Jefferson Davis and the rest of the Confederate defenders evacuated their capital of Richmond as the Civil War neared its end.
General Robert E. Lee's desperate attempts to defend Petersburg and Richmond had failed, leaving Davis and his cabinet no choice but to flee south on the Richmond and Danville rail line, the last one that had not been taken by Union troops. Overnight, the retreating soldiers would set fire to the city as they left.
Barely a week later, Lee would formally surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House.
