Today, March 9, 2019 at 6pm Eastern on C-SPAN 3

On the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Hampton Roads, John Quarstein, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center and author of “The Monitor Boys: The Crew of the Union’s First Ironclad," discusses the Monitor’s famous battle against the CSS Virginia. It was the first-ever clash of ironclads - at Hampton Roads, Virginia in March 1862. He also talks about the sinking of the Monitor in heavy seas off North Carolina later that year, and details recovery and conservation efforts of the ship since the 1970s. This talk was part of a day-long seminar co-hosted by Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, and Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.

Quarstein is the authority. His Monitor Boys and its companion, The CSS Virginia: Sink Before Surrender, are important works. How comprehensive? Sink before Surrender gives a biographical summary of every known member of Virginia's crew.
