This cookbook, "Old Timey Recipes" collected by Phyllis Connor, is a collection of recipes from cooks from North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. They are old family recipes handed down for generations. They are simple, yet tasty.. The recipes call for simple, good quality ingredients, such as butter, milk, common vegetables and meat.

As Phyllis Connor writes: "The recipes are standards,... the kind that young ladies like to learn on and the kind all of us come back to time and time again."

Great advice from the book:

Recipe For Living

"Take a generous amount of self respect,
Spice it with humor.
Stir in equal parts of compassion and love.
Measure in a few drops of frankness
(but not enough to be bitter).
Blend well. Knead gently and form into a firm loaf.
Bake in moderate oven. Baste occasionally
with sincerity and serve daily.
Your family will love it,
Your friends will envy your skill.
And strangers will long
remember you favorably."

I purchased this cookbook at the "Museum of Appalachia", located 16 miles north of Knoxville, one mile off I 75 at Norris. This is a must see museum and village. It is actually a 60 acre Museum, farm, and pioneer village. We have visited it several times over the years. They make great bean soup and cornbread, which we had for lunch the day we visited.
