Sweet Baked Goods Clippings Ohio Wedding Cake (Mrs. K.)

Antique Photograph Cabinet Card of Wedding from Duluth, MN (c.1890s)
This recipe for “Ohio Wedding Cake” comes from Miss Beecher’s Domestic Receipt Book, published in 1846. It calls for almost the exact same ingredients and proportions as Lydia Maria Child’s 1830s recipe, but the instructions are more clear. While this is a "wedding cake" recipe, it makes a wonderful holiday dessert.

Note: A gill is equal to one-half cup or four fluid ounces.

This looks good! Wedding cakes used to be more like fruitcake. Many people sent guests home with their cake rather than serve it at the wedding.
