Morning reports and other original records are contained in the Tenth Virginia Infantry Regiment Records, 1861-1864, located in the Manuscripts Collection of the Library of Virginia in Richmond (accessions 20295, 20296 and 20297).

Extant Confederate strength (morning) reports associated with the Gettysburg campaign are very rare (based on my experience), but we have two for the 10th Virginia – one taken on the eve of the battle (June 29), and another from a month later (July 30) while the regiment was recovering in Virginia. As expected, the numbers correlate fairly closely with a tally derived from individual compiled service records (discrepancies are addressed below). Taken together they allow for one of the most complete dissections of a Confederate infantry regiment at Gettysburg.

Notes on discrepancies between the morning report and compiled service records (supplemented by other sources):

(Bear in mind that the bulk of the differences naturally result from inclusion of the sick and others returning from details or even leave, between June 29 and the opening of the battle.)

Field and Staff: The lieutenant colonel and major were both killed at Chancellorsville. The commissary (captain) has not been identified – this position was about to be abolished. The third sergeant is possibly a sergeant major (not identified), or perhaps ordnance sergeant John M. Shipp (whose actual rank is private). Hospital Steward William T. Jennings was absent.

Company A: I cannot explain the absence of numbers (excepting musicians) on the morning report, but given that so few soldiers are listed as present, it suggests the company as a body had been detached and was not present at Gettysburg (a possible clue is that Private Edward A. Shotts was captured on July 4 at Williamsport, Maryland). 1st Lieutenant Adam L. Spengler was absent, wounded (at Chancellorsville). Nearly all the musicians listed in the regiment belonged to the regimental (brass) band, which in this case served as the sole band of the brigade. Every infantry regiment typically had two or three “field” musicians (drummer, bugler and/or fifer).

Company B: Captain Isaac G. Coffman was promoted to Major on September 22, 1863 but it was backdated to May 3, 1863; 1st Lieutenant S. M. Brown is marked present but was possibly detailed to another company (specifically E). 2nd Lieutenant William H. Waesche, Jr. was sent to the rear (sick?) on July 1 and captured on July 4. (The rank of junior second lieutenant is also referred to as third lieutenant.)

Company C: 2nd Lieutenant H. H. Riddlebarger had been detailed as enrolling officer for Shenandoah county.

Company E: Captain John W. Melhorn and 2nd Lieutenant John H. Hawkins were absent (both wounded at Chancellorsville). The 1st Lieutenant is not identified, but may have been detailed from Company B.

Company F: 1st Lieutenant Green B. Samuels was present but possibly detached as assistant inspector general on the brigade staff. 2nd Lieutenant David M. Ream had been detailed as the conscript officer for Page and Shenandoah counties.

Company H: 1st Lieutenant John H. Rolston was absent on a detail to gather conscripts and deserters, and 2nd Lieutenant Lycurgus C. Myers was absent wounded. Andrew J. Showalter was promoted from 1st Corporal to 4th Sergeant on June 24.

Company I: 2nd Lieutenant Hiram H. Miller was absent sick at the hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Company K: 2nd Lieutenant William E. Pitman had been transferred to the quartermaster department.

Company L: 1st Lieutenant Robert F. Carter was absent due to sickness.

Part 5

The July 30 morning report would of course reflect losses from the recently concluded Gettysburg campaign, but by this time no doubt quite a few men had rejoined the regiment after sufficiently recovering from sickness or wounds received in previous battles, especially Chancellorsville.

Any such gains were more than offset by the soaring number of “French leave” cases recorded immediately following the conclusion of the Gettysburg campaign. However, most of the new “absent without leave” infractions were probably temporary. As Adjutant Whitfield G. Kisling explained in a letter to his cousin on August 26: “There are a great many from the Rockingham and Shenandoah companies who have flanked. It is nearly an impossibility to keep up a regiment when near their homes.”

You could see that. There are threads endlessly arguing over how much desertion was the case. The implication generally is that the these men felt no loyalty to their army. I've always wondered if the lure of home made the number of cases high- can you imagine how tough it would be ( especially after the horrors of Gettysburg ) to march past?

Great info, Tom. I agree with you about Co. A. Clearly they were present during the campaign, but likely were detailed as a group to guard wagons or something similar.
