November 17, 1800 - Congress holds its 1st session in Washington D.C. in the unfinished Capitol Building.

November 17, 1842 - Fugitive slave George Latimer captured in Boston.

November 17, 1857 - Albert Sidney Johnston arrives at Fort Bridger, 125 miles northwest of Salt Lake City. It had been burned under Brigham Young's orders.

November 17, 1861 - Skirmish at Cypress Bridge, near Rumsey, McClean County, KY.

November 17, 1862 - Burnside's Right Grand Division, under the command of Edwin Vose Sumner arrives north of the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia.

November 17, 1862 - The USS San Jacinto lies in wait off the Caribbean island of Martinique for the Confederate steamer, CSS Alabama, but fails to prevent her from leaving port.

November 17, 1864 - Affair at Towaliga Bridge, GA, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, takes four different routes to the sea in an attempt to confuse the Confederates.

November 17, 1862 - President Jefferson Davis appoints Maj. Gen. Gustavus Woodson Smith, CSA, as acting Confederate Secretary of War, Richmond, VA.
He is buried in New London, Connecticut. Visited the cemetery and his gravesite in June 2017.
