November 13, 1809 - John A. Dahlgren, US Navy officer and inventor (Civil war Dahlgren-cannon), born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (d. 1870)

November 13, 1814 - Major-General Joseph Hooker born, Hadley, Massachusetts.

November 13, 1839 - A convention of abolitionists meeting in Warsaw, NY, selects James Birney as its presidential candidate.

November 13, 1849 - Peter H. Burnett and John McDougal are elected the first Governor and Lieutenant Governor of California under the Constitution created at the statehood convention.

November 13, 1860 - At the end of a fiery, pro-secession speech, Robert Toombs of Georgia announces his resignation from the U. S. Senate at the end of his term.

November 13, 1861 - Rev. M. R. Watkinson from Ridleyville, PA, writes Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase asking the motto "God, Liberty, Law" be added to all currency to "...place us openly under the Divine protection we have personally claimed." Chase made "In God We Trust" the final wording.

November 13, 1861 - Federal expedition from Greenville to Doniphan, MO. (Nov 13-15)

November 13, 1861 - Federal scout through Texas and Wright Counties, MO. (Nov 13-18)

November 13, 1861 - Skirmish near Romney, WV.

November 13, 1861 - Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, USA, snubs President Abraham Lincoln by retiring to bed, rudely refusing to meet with Lincoln, as Lincoln patiently waits in his parlor.

November 13, 1862 - Federal expedition from Beaufort to Doboy River, GA, with the capture of around 250,000 board feet of Confederate lumber, etc. (Nov 13-18)

November 13, 1862 - Lieut. Gen. William J. Hardee, CSA, assumes the command of the 2nd Army Corps, the Confederate Army of the Mississippi.

November 14, 1862 - Skirmish at Holly Springs, MS, with the Union forces capturing the important railroad depot there.

November 13, 1862 - Skirmish near Nashville, TN.

November 13, 1862 - Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, Army of Tennessee, moves his troops from Chattanooga, toward Murfreesboro, TN, to unite his forces with Maj. Gen. John Cabell Breckinridge, CSA.

November 13, 1862 - Skirmishes at Sulphur Springs, VA. (Nov 13-14)

November 13, 1863 - Brig. Gen. Carnot Posey, CSA, dies at Charlottesville, VA, from infection that set in from the wound received Oct 14 at the engagement at Bristoe Station, VA.

November 13, 1863 - Skirmish at Mount Ida, AR, with a Union attack on the Confederate camp there.

November 13, 1863 - Skirmishes with Indians near the Big Bar on the South Fork of the Trinity River, CA, with various encounters. (Nov 13-14)

November 13, 1863 - Brig. Gen. Alfred N. A. Duffle's, USA, Cavalry command reaches Charleston, WV, part of the Cavalry expedition to Lewisburg.

November 13, 1864 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

November 13, 1864 - Skirmish with Indians at Ash Creek, 12 miles from Fort Larned, KS, as the Indians attack and capture 5 wagons loaded with corn, and kill one Yankee, injuring 4.

November 13, 1864 - Federal scout for Confederate guerrillas in Pemiscot County, MO, with skirmish. (Nov 13-16)

November 13, 1864 - Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, breaks off contact with Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, USA, and withdraws south back to New Market, VA, as he is further weakened when a large portion of his force is sent to assist Gen. Robert E. Lee's, CSA, dwindling siege lines around Petersburg, VA.

November 13, 1865 - South Carolina, where it all began 4 years earlier, is the 23rd state of the Union to ratify the 13th amendment, which abolishes slavery.

November 13, 1865 - US Treasury issues the first gold certificates.
