"In the name of God! How many cannon do you have? I have counted 15 already!" exclaimed Colonel Abel D. Streight. To which (then) Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest calmly replied, "I reckon that is all that has kept up." The exchange took place on May 3, 1863 - the culmination of the cavalry campaign known as Streight's Raid.

It's a fascinating campaign with memorable place names like Day's Gap, Hog Mountain, and Cedar Bluff. Besides Forrest and Streight, there's a large cast of unforgettable characters including Col. Gilbert Hathaway (73rd IN), Emma Sansom, the Murphree Sisters, and Pvt. Robert Turner (4th TN Cav.) Abel Streight was a brilliant man and, pitted against a lesser opponent, he might have even succeeded. But he drew the short straw when he met Forrest as his adversary and that made a big difference in the fortunes of Streight and his men. It may have been the event that boosted Forrest toward Civil War stardom.

@Norman Dasinger Jr is a member of the faculty for Blue & Gray Education Society and a resident of Rainbow City, Alabama. His interest in the Civil War began in the early 1980's when he and his father began researching their family history. Finding several ancestors who were participants on both sides of the conflict, they set out to see the battlefields they had fought upon, a journey that led to multiple states. Mr. Dasinger studied local battlefields in Georgia and Alabama and became active in interpreting them for various organizations. He continues to enjoy showing people the deep and rich history of locations in his state and surrounding areas. Mr. Dasinger regularly leads tours for Blue & Gray Education Society and, in 2018, he provided his services as guide for the CivilWarTalk member event at Chickamauga.

Make plans now to join us for Mr. Dasinger's virtual presentation on (almost) the 158th anniversary of Streight's surrender to Forrest and learn more about this interesting cavalry campaign.

Probably a dumb question, but are these available after the live forum? Thank you.
They are available if the presenter allows us to record them. We don’t know until the night of the presentation and ask the presenter if we may record them. Most allow us to but some don’t. If they allow us to record them, the talk gets posted on CWT in about 30 days.

This presentation is receiving attention from outside of CivilWarTalk and is likely to be a full house. Seating is limited. Please don't delay; REGISTER here.

Here's a little teaser for those considering attending the presentation - Mr. Dasinger's latest article for Blue and Gray Education Society on the Skirmish at Black Creek

And a photo I took today of the surrender site at Cedar Bluff, AL.

Does Mr. Dasinger know if Streight and friends were indeed imprisoned in Libby prison for about 10 months? That must have disappointed General Grant, who had released the Vicksburg parolees, if that was Streight's fate. That had to make Stanton's policy of no longer exchanging prisoners look very good.

If he gives half the presentation that he did for our Chickamauga muster courtesy of @lelliott19 it will be a GREAT ONE.
He was fantastic for that one! I have always found Mr. Dasinger to be an enthusiastic, engaging, and knowledgeable presenter. I'm guessing he would prefer to do this in person, but since CWT members are all over the US - and the world - Zoom is the next best thing!

Streight's Raid includes a host of interesting characters and many memorable stories that make it engaging for all audiences. It'll definitely be a family-friendly presentation so invite your spouse, your kids, your grandchildren, and/or your friends!

Streight's engagements with Forrest in Alabama took place over a 10 day period and covered a route of nearly 200 miles! Mr. Dasinger will provide a series of maps (on screen) so participants can keep up with the engagements, their locations, and the distance covered.

Please do not delay. I'd hate for anyone to be shut out.

I'll be happy to include this question for you in case you are unable to attend?

If you are considering attending, Zoom is super easy to use. Once you've completed the registration process, you'll receive an email that contains a link to the program. When it's time, click that link and you will be magically transported to the CivilWarTalk waiting room. Along the way, you may also have to click 'OK' to allow Zoom to use your microphone/camera. If you don't want your camera on, you can always turn it off once you begin to enter the meeting. When it's time to begin, we will admit everyone from the waiting room and poof! You'll be attending the presentation.
