Was fortunate enough to have run across this Colt 1860 New Model Army recently. From the serial number I believe it was made in 1862. It appears to be all matching from the numbers I see. Functions perfectly (half cock, full cock, etc) and the barrel shows strong rifling and looks like it has been taken care of.

I’m thinking about ordering a letter from Colt to try to get its history but not sure what it will consist of or give insight about. I am reading a detailed book on the model but just started on it so hopefully it’ll give some good info on the model in general.

Couldn‘t be happier with it, especially for the price, and wanted to share some pics. Hoping to learn more about the model (and maybe this specific gun) so gladly welcome comments/feedback/info. Thank you

Nice looking all matching Colt. Its not listed in the SRS and its hard to see but does it have any cartouche's on the grips or any single letters stamped on it? On the Colt letter, Keep in mind that it cost $300 and it will only show where it was shipped. If they don't have any info you do NOT get your money back. Just Sayin

Nice '60! Glad to see that you have Charlie's book too - incredible resource. As ucvrelics says the Colt Archive letter will only really tell you where it was shipped to, which can be interesting (ie: Boston Navy Yard or Washington Arsenal) or rather mundane (a hardware store or contractor) depending on what you're looking for, research-wise. I've "lettered" two old Colts about 30 years apart and the price difference ($30 then to $300 now) is stunning. Here's a link to see what they do and the pricing: Colt Archive Properties, LLC - Home

I don’t see any cartouches on the grips but it does have several letters stamped on it. I tried to get pics as best as I could. I assume these are inspection stamps as the parts were manufactured?

I realize this might be a silly question as I understand “what’s it worth” is what someone will pay for it. I also know prices seem to vary widely. But from what you can tell in my pictures, what would be a reasonable price for this Colt? (No, I don’t intend to sell it but curious to know opinions on value). Thank you

I don't like to give values based on photos as there are to many variables that can't be seen in photos. I would just check the gun boards to get an idea of prices. If it did have the military cartouche's it would add value.

If you take off the grips are they numbered in pencil or India ink in the back strap or spring channel? Also, and it might just be the lighting, but the loading lever finish doesn't jive with the plunger and the finish on the rest of the piece. The finish on the hammer is similarly different from the rest of the revolver and looks kinda like the loading lever. Not saying that they're replacements, it could be the lighting, but the wear on those parts looks inconsistent with the rest of the revolver in the pics. It's still a beautiful '60, regardless.
