Very interesting. I'd love to see it.
There was one other play about Ben Butler -- it was staged in Baltimore about 1990, and its subject was Butler's unauthorized occupation of Baltimore. Memory fades, but I believe it was in the form of a "mock trial" of Butler for exceeding his orders. And the dialog was adapted directly from period sources. They said they deliberately chose an actor who looked nothing like Butler, so as not to prejudice the audience against him on first sight.

Poor Unhandsome Ben!

@JPK Huson 1863, Ben once described himself as "A True Friend of Southern Rights, and a True Enemy of Southern Wrongs."

I feel sort of the same way about him. Like you, I'm an unapologetic admirer of his good qualities and accomplishments -- and they were many; but also have to admit he often was NOT a nice man, and on occasion could be downright repugnant.

But then, who's perfect?
