Former New York Governor Horatio Seymour was often targeted by Republican newspapers as a crypto-Copperhead for his behavior during the Civil War. Many of the newspapers said he was unfit to be president and used his actions during the NYC Draft Riots as a reason why Union men should vote for Grant.
