Have read about Lieutenant David Porter McCorkle, who ran the Naval Ordnance Works in New Orleans, moving equipment and stores to Atlanta in March or April of '62.

Was that equipment lost when the city fell in '62 or was it able to be removed with the retreating Confederates?

As far as I know it was left behind. Mallory's "Armstrong gun" is of a mystery, as at that date it can only refer to the breechloader. Brooke was up to date with all the latest developments but there is no mention of this in his papers or diary . Yet another unanswered question -or set of !
