Nero A large and fierce guard dog belonging to Confederate Capt. George W. Alexander, commandant of Richmond's Castle Thunder prison. During the winter of 1864 Alexander was transferred to Libby Prison, and Nero patrolled the grounds at night to prevent escapes. At one time Alexander was offered $700 in gold for the dog, but declined. Nevertheless, he abandoned the dog during the evacuation of Richmond, and Nero was confiscated by Union authorities and taken to New York
