I have tried finding out more about my gggrandfather Benjamin Ward Green. He was from Monroe Virginia, now West Virginia. Says he enlisted in Sep 1861. His father was also Benjamin Ward Green. I have found a Ward Green, Monroe Co. that was in the 166th Militia, a B.W. Green in the 40th Battn Cav-24th Va Cav. Found a B. Green in Millers Battery. But trying to make out this pension it looks like he says he was in Lowry's Battery which was formed from Monroe Co. men. But I have not seen him listed in that unit. If anyone can help me try to make out what he put on his pension that would be great. I even have a copy of the Lowry, Chapman, Bryan Battery book and he isn't in there either. Thanks for any assistance.

Hang in there. Someone will be along who knows. This time of year people are wandering around battlefields and stuff, so it might take a bit...but there will be help.

Yeah, it is hard to make out. I am sure it is him that is listed in the 166th militia, since on the census it says Ward Green and on that roster he is listed as Ward Green. But reading the pension form it does look like he says Lowry's Battery. I just can't make it out too well.

Can't tell if it Lowry or not. Lowry's Centreville Rifles was formed in Prince William County (eastern VA), served in Western Virginia and may have taken replacements from outside later in the war.

Another angle - it appears to me the words after Battery are "General McCoslin's Command". Assuming McCoslin is a misspelling of McCausland it might be worthwhile looking for at batteries serving with his commands.

Yeah, that is what I thought as well, and it would make sense since he was from monroe county west virginia and many men that were under McCausland were recruited from that area.

I was trying to read the names of his witness's on the other page and it looked like J N Ellison or J Z Ellison and a Wilson Bailey or something. I am pretty sure he is the one listed in the 166th Militia as Ward Green but I am baffled about what unit under McCausland he was in. It does look like a Battery, but I can't find any specific ones that would be under him. This is a tough nut to crack.

A report from John McCausland dated November 14, 1864 describing an action near Front Royal, VA. In the report he mentions positioning two pieces of artillery under command of Captain Lurty. Further research shows Captain Warren S. Lurty commanded the Roanoke Horse Artillery, formed in 1863 and served until the end of the war. It might be worth looking at this unit.
