Nathan Bedford Forrest was a slave trader most of his adult life then of course a celebrated Lt. General in the Confederate Army. NBF was also the first and last Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan but resigned and ordered the Klan dispanded in 1869 but of course that didn't happen. Two years before he died NBF addressed the Maypole Association which latter became the National Association of Couloured People and stated to the people of color that he was for equal rights. Yet for some reasons his fellow white Southeners decided against equal rights for a good one hundred years.
NBF received vilification in modern years such has having his statute taken down in Memphis and his body reintered in Columbus, Tennessee.
NBF was both for and against racial equality making him a complex figure in Southern history. Robert E Lee never took a public stand against racism has did NBF.
