Nashville Area Civil War Sites

It depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. The Battles of Milton, Hovers Gap, Liberty Gap, Shelbyville& Nashville are all there within easy driving distance of Nashville. Fortress Rosecrans, & Forts Grainger, Henry, Donelson & Defiance are worth a look. If you are into historic houses, there are many CW era homes to tour. Cruising the river to Fort Donelson is eye opening. The Signal Corps Fort Negley, Fort Grainger, Works at Triune & Fort Transit are a very different & surprising CW story.

Make sure you visit Shy’s Hill, the turning point of the Battle of Nashville. The Confederate mistake of entrenching on the geographical crest instead of the military crest is quite evident by the remaining traces of the trenches, Also the stone wall south of Battery Lane which was occupied by A. P. Stewart. My father always told stories about all the relics he would gather up by the wall after heavy rains. When he was a boy in the 1920s.
