My upcoming Virginia trip

If you haven't been there, the "White Oak Civil War Museum" just across the river from Fredericksburg is a must. It is a little hard to find and in some ways kind of funky, but worth it. It is a private museum and research center that has more information than any museum I have ever visited.

So I have seen Gettysburg, Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and most of the Richmond National Park. I have even been to the defenses of Washington, And all of the DC Museums. What I am wondering is what is left that is a must for a civil war historian to see in the D.C. Area?
You didn't mention Arlington National Cemetery and other sites in Richmond not in the National Park.

Harper's Ferry and Sharpsburg (Antietam battlefield) and the courthouse in Charles Town could all be done in like two days, plus in between you could visit the casinos in Charles Town and gamble/ play the slots and bet on some horses and catch a live show. The Jefferson County courthouse retains the original room where John Brown was tried and convicted of treason. A few blocks away is where he was hung but that property is private land and I think some houses are there now. The little town of Frederick MD also hosts the Museum of Civil War Medicine that I haven't been to yet, but I understand it's a real "jaw dropping" experience to visit.

Then there is Mine Run, Cedar Mountain, Cavalry Battle at Louisa, Va., then In the Shenandoah Valley, Port Republic, Cross Keys, New Market, Winchester, 2 Ceder Creek battles out side of Winchester, Kerns Town, Front Royal.

Get a copy of Wittenberg's "Glory Enough for All". After you have read it, get a good map and spend a day exploring Louisa and Orange Counties. The Trevilian Station battle is not well marked but the roads are still there even though they are paved now. With a little effort you can get a feel for a hard fought cavalry campaign. When you get to Gordonsville visit the Exchange Hotel Museum then walk across the street and try the barbeque.

You forgot to mention the Medical Museum in Fredrick, Maryland. Also Brandy Station Battlefield Park and the sites associated with the Retreat from Gettysburg Tour. David.

Though it only has a small amount of Civil War material, the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico is an amazing place to see.

Definitely come to Appomattox. Appomattox Court House National Park and the American Civil War Museum are here. I think you would enjoy them.

I have actually been to Antietam, Gettysburg, Arlington National Cemetery, Monocacy, National Medical Museum. I been to Appomattox and New Market though its been a few years. This time on my trip I plan to visit the medical museum in Richmond. I have been to almost all of the battlefields in Virginia only ones I haven't been to are Cedar Mountain, Brandy Station and Bristoe. I am planning to probably go over to Harper's Ferry I never been. I always go to Fredericksburg every trip I enjoy Riverby books. Some more good bookstores I enjoy is both Second Story bookstores I think the one in Rockville is better then the DC one. I always go to the used book sales in the area of DC as you never know what you might find. I collect biographies on generals from both sides. Then I visit the used bookstore in Frederick Maryland. I am always trying to find good used bookstores that have civil war books. I would love to explore Annapolis.

If Newport News is not to far out of the way, The Mariner's Museum, Fort Monroe, stop in at Newport News City Park, on into Yorktown, Williamsburg, and that leads into Richmond or Petersburg. Big loop across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. A lot of historic markers, such as Young's Mill on the Peninsula, but difficult to access.
Lubliner.
