Attached is a page from the Evansville Courier and Press, July 11, 1898. The main article is about the 13,000 to 14,000 mules purchased by the government for use in the Spanish American War. But, it contains some interesting muleish Civil War anecdotes.
Note also the neighboring article entitled "Feline Warriors." The Army, it seems, was recruiting cats in its war against rats in Commisary Department depots, and had put out for bids for suitable rations for them.
"The cats cost the United States only about five cents a day. It is hard to say how much they save the government, but, certainly hundreds of dollars a year."
