A wonderful book published in 1901 is "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" by Alice Hagan Rice. It was a best seller when first published. It tells the story of the Wiggs family struggling against all odds in the Cabbage Patch, an old Louisville, Kentucky slum. In this area ramshackle cottages played hop=scotch over the railroad tracts. The story follows the Wiggs family as they face eviction from their dilapidated house and take in two orphanage fugitives. This is a wonderful story of hope triumphing over despair. It is well worth getting and reading.

Here is Mrs Wiggs recipe for Boiled Cabbage.

"1 good size head of cabbage
1 chuck of seasonin' meat, or ham hock is mighty good
1 red pepper pod
some salt and pepper

Put the cabbage, meat, red pepper and salt and pepper in a kettle and cover with water. Cook down real slow. It's mighty good het up agin' and be sure to have some bread."
