He was elected Senator in 1861 when Hannibal Hamlin became Vice -President. Then Hamlin defeated Morrill in a Senate race in 1869. Then a few months later Morrill filled the vacant seat of the deceased William Fessenden.And was reelected in 1870.His rival James G. Blaine filled his seat when Morrill took the position of Treasury Secretary caused by the resignation of Benjamin Bristow.
