Monument to Sergeant Richard Rowland Kirkland located in front of the Stone Wall at Fredericksburg. Kirkland was a member of the Second South Carolina Regiment of Kershaw's Brigade of McLaws' Division, who on December 14, 1862, the day after the battle, received permission to carry water to Federal wounded who still lay where they had fallen the day before. When it was pointed out that he would likely be killed if he showed himself above the Stone Wall that sheltered the Confederates during the battle he insisted that someone should try to help the suffering men and that he was willing to try. He was successful in his efforts; once the Federals still on the field hunkering down behind breastworks of their own dead realized what he was doing they held their fire. Sadly, the heroic Kirkland was himself killed the following year at Chickamauga as a lieutenant.

The photo above shows the location of the monument in front of the Stone Wall at the base of Marye's Heights; the Marye House is in the background atop the eponymous hill which during the battle was crowned with Confederate cannon.
