The illustration above was drawn by German immigrant Thomas Nast. The cartoonist is credited with popularizing the idea that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. Because nobody had visited the Pole, Nast could make up any details about it that he wanted. In the illustration, Santa is looking to see how children are behaving.
