On March 27, 1865, the Captured flags were turned over to the War Department by the men who captured them. Corporal Bickford told Secretary of War Stanton, as well as the Hon. Ira Harris, a Senator from New York that his home was at Johnson's Creek, Niagara County, New York, that he had been in service nearly four years, and thought he would "see the war out." The flag Bickford turned in was one of General George Crook's headquarters flags, captured by Confederates in February of 1865 at Cumberland, Maryland.
