McDowell had a special relationship to the 14th Brooklyn. He gave it the motto used by the regiment for over 100 years - "Baptized by fire."
It camped outside the Arlington House that was his HQ for a while. I still don't know why the best photo portrait of him has him holding an Austrian sword.
 
Up until now, there appears to be a lack of literature on him.
There is, at least in part because nobody has been able to find a substantial stash of papers/correspondence by him. The book accesses a few letters between him and his wife that John Hennessy apparently was able to locate, but without those kinds of sources an author is pretty much left with what's in the official sources and the papers, etc of those who dealt with him.
