Some things to consider.

The climb up the hill to the battlefield is rather steep (Jackson was unable to ride his horse up the sloop) and should not be attempted by folks with mobility issues. McDowell is a crossroads hamlet with little to offer the tourist except for a small general store that sells its own maple syrup. Monterrey is about 10 miles west and has a nice Inn/restaurant as well as some shopping. If you attend, I suggest staying in Staunton. Rte 250 is a twisty mountain road that offers some amazing views but should be driven by confident drivers.
