Today is National Cherry Dessert Day. Cherries date back to the Stone Age, as cherry pits have been found in European Caves from that time period. Cherries were brought to the United States in 1600s by early settlers. The original cherry trees grown besides ones from early settlers were grown in Michigan in 1852.

Today, Michigan provides about 75% of the United States supply of cherries.

So for National Cherry Day have a special Cherry Dessert.

Cherry Oatmeal Crumble Bars

1 package yellow cake mix
2 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
3/4 cup butter. melted
1 can cherry pie filling

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Line a 9 x 13 baking dish with parchment paper or grease with cooking spray.
Mix cake mix and oats in a large bowl.
Add melted butter, stir until crumbly.
Press down half the crumbs onto the bottom of the pan.
Carefully spread cherry pie filling over the crumb crust.
Spread remaining crumbs over preserves and press down gently.
Bake for 18 to 23 minutes or until very lightly golden brown.
Eat warm or cold, cut into bars, and serve.

Really like cherry pie, but most recipies are using the hard to find sour cherries and add a ton of sugar. Here is one using "sweet" cherries, like the ones that are on season in the summer and available at grocery stores and farmer's markets and much less sugar.

Sweet cherry pie
============

Ingredients:

2 lbs or sweet (red or bing) cherries, halved and pitted
1/2 c brown sugar
2 TBS starch or flour
2 TBS orange juice

2 9 inch pie crusts

Speaking of deserts that are calling for cherry pie filling, here is one that is pretty good for you, yummy and pretty simple.

Cherry Cheesecake Parfait
---------------------------------

1 container of Vanilla Greek Yogurt (Fage Total is the best, but can use anything)
Cherry pie filling (see above recipe, but instead of filling a pie and cooking, put on a sauce pan and bring to a boil on stove top)
(optional) Graham crackers or cereal

Bumping this thread, as it is Cherry Dessert Day.

I just recently bought some fresh cherries. They were California cherries. They are so sweet and delicious. My husband and I have been enjoying them so much. Just eating them alone is a fine cherry dessert.
We like going to Trader Joe's as they have glass jars of Morelo Cherries which are whole and pitted in a liquid.they are a semi-sweet cherry so they are perfect for baking.the perfect cherry for a Black Forest Cake.
