Today is National Cherry Dessert Day. Cherries date back to the Stone Age, as cherry pits have been found in European Caves from that time period. Cherries were brought to the United States in 1600s by early settlers. The original cherry trees grown besides ones from early settlers were grown in Michigan in 1852.
Today, Michigan provides about 75% of the United States supply of cherries.
So for National Cherry Day have a special Cherry Dessert.
Cherry Oatmeal Crumble Bars
1 package yellow cake mix
2 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
3/4 cup butter. melted
1 can cherry pie filling
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Line a 9 x 13 baking dish with parchment paper or grease with cooking spray.
Mix cake mix and oats in a large bowl.
Add melted butter, stir until crumbly.
Press down half the crumbs onto the bottom of the pan.
Carefully spread cherry pie filling over the crumb crust.
Spread remaining crumbs over preserves and press down gently.
Bake for 18 to 23 minutes or until very lightly golden brown.
Eat warm or cold, cut into bars, and serve.
