CivilWarTalk Presents:
Gettysburg National Military Park Ranger and Historian
Matt Atkinson
"Lee Prepares for Invasion:
The Army Reorganization After Chancellorsville"

In A Free Live Video Presentation

We are pleased to host Mr. Atkinson on (or almost on) the 158th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Bring your questions and join us as Matt Atkinson discusses and answers questions about the reorganization of the Army of Northern Virginia after Chancellorsville.

Matt Atkinson, Gettysburg National Military Park ranger and historian, is a native of Houston, Mississippi - a little town about thirty miles below Tupelo. During the Vicksburg campaign, on April 20, 1863, Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson and his cavalrymen passed through Houston on their way to Starkville, MS - as part of "Grierson's Raid." It was this local connection that first prompted Matt's interest in the Civil War. Mr. Atkinson is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he received bachelor's degrees in Business and History. He earned his Masters in History from Louisiana-Monroe. Matt has worked at Petersburg National Battlefield, Natchez National Historical Park, Manassas National Battlefield, Vicksburg National Military Park, and is currently a ranger/historian at Gettysburg National Military Park.

Mr. Atkinson recently scored his dream home - a little log cabin near Gettysburg, Pa. While the Civil War is his passion, his true love is his family. Matt has three children - Ben, age 12, and 'The Ladies' ... Emma and Aubrey, age 6.

It's not too late! Plan to join us tomorrow night at 8:30 pm EDT on Zoom as Gettysburg National Military Park ranger and historian Matt Atkinson discusses and answers questions on Lee's reorganization of the Army of Northern Virginia after Chancellorsville. This program will employ a bit of a different format --- mostly Q & A. So please bring your questions and plan to ask them live OR, if you prefer, enter them in the chat box. See you tomorrow night! Please don't delay. Seating is limited to 100 participants.

In case you missed Matt's presentation last night, you missed a great one that was super entertaining. Last time Matt was with us, earlier this year, I wasn't able to join the zoom due to work commitments.

I'm so glad I was able to join this time and meet him. He shared some interesting perspectives on the motivations for Lee's selection of Corps commanders. Plus some amusing incidents, funny stories, and even good advice. If you have never participated in one of Matt's programs, I can't encourage you enough to do so. He is knowledgeable but never haughty. I guarantee - you will not be disappointed!

The CWT production team is pleased to host Matt anytime. When you have such a knowledgeable and entertaining guest, it makes the technical part of it easy! I hope Matt will come back and join us again very soon.

Excellent presentation....Matt's programs are always informative and entertaining (even if my own question was completely ignored - probably because, in my zeal to post, I neglected to put a question mark at the end of the inquiry- oh well:D)

Sorry to miss this one. My first encounter with Matt was as a member of the National Regiment at a living history encampment on the Antietam Battlefield about 10 year ago (or maybe it was 15...time flies). Matt was the black powder ranger in charge of supervising the firing demo and introduced himself to the unit as being from Mississippi. When we identified ourselves as the 8th Ohio, he said, as only Matt can in that slow drawl, "y'all were at Gettysburg, right?" We replied that the 8th was there. He said, without missing a beat "I believe y'all might have killed my great grandaddy." From then on, he was "Mississippi" to us and regularly shared his funny stories and witty insights with us whenever we saw him.

Stuff like this is why I asked Matt if he'd considered writing a memoir about being a ranger. Three decades as a NPS ranger combined with a very distinct and memorable "voice". He might need to wait until he retires before publishing it, but it would be worth the wait.
