March Video Discussion: Lincoln and Emancipation

I knew the generics of Lincoln's pre-change of heart and opinion, but not all of the specifics. Like him working against freeing slaves (I guess you'd put it that way) and free Africans in the 1850s

He certainly did. Looking at the Declaration, AoC and Constitution with 5th graders...they are stunned with the inability to free the slaves and give up the excuse that they were inferior based on...well common sense and decency really...and more specifically, their efforts in the revolutionary war.

Dred Scott changed his opinion, even though he seemed to have argued against something similar years before, siding with the slaveholder.

Even though he wanted to stop slavery in its tracks where it existed. By 1863 he must have realized to win he would have to destroy it all together

It would gone about 100% smoother than it did and although racism would not have disappeared, relations would likely have been better country-wide
