March 20, 1804 - Neal Dow, American Brigadier General (Union Army), born in Portland, Maine (d. 1897)

March 20, 1812 - George Bibb Crittenden, Major General (Confederate Army), born in Russellville, KY. (d. 1880)

March 20, 1825 - William Nelson Rector Beall, Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Bardstown, KY. (d. 1883)

March 20, 1830 - Eugene Asa Carr, American Brevet Major General (Union Army), born in Hamburg, New York (d. 1910)

March 20, 1852 - First publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

March 20, 1854 - In Ripon, Wisconsin a group of citizens led by attorney Alvan E. Bovay met in a schoolhouse in support of the abolition of slavery. They adopted the name "Republicans."

March 20, 1861 - Fort Brown, TX, is abandoned by the Union forces, led by Lieut. Col. Electus Backus, 3rd US Infantry.

March 20, 1861 - Fort Duncan, TX, is abandoned by the Union forces, led by Bvt. Maj. O. L. Shepherd, 3rd US Infantry.

Banks, USA, assumes the command of the 5th Army Corps, as Banks is ordered to remove the majority of his command to the defense of Washington, DC, the remaining portion in the Shenandoah Valley is withdrawing towards Winchester from Strasburg, and is pursued by Maj. Gen. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, VA.

March 20, 1862 - Federal reconnaissance to Gainesville, about 9 miles from Manassas Junction, VA, by Brig. Gen. Oliver O. Howard, USA.
