Manassas Tour.

The Thornton House is among three surviving structures on the Battlefield that are original. It's located southwest of Sudley Ford, maybe 100 yards. The Thornton Family endured the first battle and fled the second. The NPS marker at the house indicates family diaries recorded that when they returned after the second battle, they found their home had been converted to a Union Army hospital. All of the rooms in the house were drenched in blood and there were about 150 unburied bodies in their yard.

The woods have grown up around the house, but the land form, the hills, are still evident. This is a picture of the house in 1862.

The Stone Bridge at Warrenton Turnpike was a hotly contested (and misunderstood) objective by both Armies during the 1st Battle of Manassas. It was blown up for strategic reasons by Confederate forces after the battle. It looked like this:

It was rebuilt after the war and today looks like this:
