Many years ago, I was with a reenactment group during their month-of-March training weekend. The horses were sinking up to their pasterns into the soft wet ground, and the cold water was seeping up through my groundcloths.

Therefor my question is, how much of the battlefield was marshy during the battles at Manassas? Was it just this one field, or was the marshyness typical of that area during that time period?

thank you in advance,
Dave E.

I doubt any of the battlefield was during both engagements . 1rst Manassas was July 21, 2nd one was the end of August. Summer months have always been hot and stifling here. The ground gets hard as a rock here during the summer months. Early spring with lots of rain will soak the topsoil and the red clay underneath won't absorb it.
