Surprised few have left any comments on this until now.
Mahone was an excellent division commander in the late war, being Lee's workhorse for the various counter thrusts around Petersburg. He had a poor showing at Gettysburg though, where his brigade was essentially unengaged. It was also his men who, after taking part in Sorrel's Unfinished Railroad attack at the Wilderness, accidentally shot at Longstreet's party, wounding Longstreet and killing Brigadier General Micah Jenkins.

I suppose just about everyone has heard the story of his wounding at 2nd Manassas. His wife was working as a nurse in Richmond and was sent word by Gov. Letcher that Mahone had been injured and that it was only a flesh wound. Mrs.Mahone replied "Now I know it's serious for William has no flesh whatsoever". The wound did cause him to miss out on the Maryland Campaign.

During the war Mahone had a cow and chickens accompany him so he could be supplied with eggs and dairy products. He did this to combat acute Dyspepsia.

Widely regarded as the "hero" of the Battle of the Crater. Mahone rallied the Confederate forces(2 of his brigades) and repelled the attack and took away the union advantage. Mahone was promoted to major general for this quick and effective leadership.
