For those of you researching Madison County, NC military men, here's a helpful hint: Compiled military service records from National Archives contain great information, and can also be confusing. Both Union and Confederate records usually have a line - where born. Confederate records sometimes have a line - residence. A man's record who lived in Madison county all his life may show he was born in Buncombe or Yancey county. That may not actually be an error, as Madison county was not formed until 1851; and Yancey was not formed until 1833. Yancey was formed from part of Buncombe, and Madison was formed from parts of Buncombe and Yancey.
