Hi, what would have been the actual color of a model 12pd bronze Napoleon at the battle of Gettysburg?
I mean the color of the cannon barrel itself?
Would it have been a newer bronze color or would it have already developed a patina of green on it?
Where the cannons polished at all?
Thanks

The guns were kept clean, polished and presentable, there isn't an artilleryman worth his salt that doesn't take pride in his gun. The guns were only allowed to tarnish after they were taken out of service. The carriages would have been painted an olive drab color with black metal fittings. Paint, polishing and cleaning equipment would have been kept in the Battery Wagon.
