I had a relative Samuel David Stephenson who served under this man until Samuel D. Stephenson's service record claims Samuel deserted on July 2,1863 at Gettysburg. I hope that was not the case as both Samuel Stephenson and Col Gaines Chisholm Smith lived in Athens,Alabama after the war.
Col. Gaines Chisholm Smith belonged to the 9th Alabama Infantry,Company H, the Limestone Greys. He fought in the Indian wars, the Mexican War,and the Civil War. He joined the 9th Alabama Infantry as a
lieutenant and became a captain in 1861,and later a lieutenant colonel. Col Gaines Chisholm Smith was severely wounded and captured at Gettysburg. He was sent to Fort Delaware.
Here is his picture from Find-A-Grave.

His military service record and the mention of Gaines Chisholm Smith in battles is at the bottom of the page of the Giles County,Tennessee Genweb.

A lot of times CS records would show things that were incorrect. He could have been captured, wounded etc and not there for roll call. Being he was from North Alabama paging @lelliott19
