I visited the Monroe county Museum today. This is said to be a Louisiana Tiger's knife.

Here's a La. Tigers' "D" guard, clip point bowie captured in 1862 during Burnsides adventure around New Bern, N.C. in 1862.
Much smaller than what you'd imagine they would have used, but certainly more practical.

Interesting piece; however the Louisiana Tiger attribution seems doubtful to me - after Bull Run I'm sure there were all sorts of references to them in the press, letters, etc., but I don't believe any were stationed in or near North Carolina, especially this early in the war!

Fearsome looking things, I'll say that. Don't want to be on the business end of them.
For those who may not be aware, although I have no reason to doubt either of these examples, belt, fighting or "side" knives of this sort have long been among the most faked artifacts of the war - as a collector I wouldn't begin to think about "investing" in one due to the very many and by now old fakes there are around!
