Several Years ago when the transcriptions of the General Lyons disaster passenger/Surivors list was on the Friends of Florence Stockade, I printed the lists out-simply for refernece of those lost and those who survivied. Now that this website is unusable-please see attachments--{Please excuse the Ohio OCC titles-this was on scrappaper and it was the only thing available for me to print on!}

@noman, do you have a particular interest in the US transport General Lyon? I'd be interested in discussing with you as I've started writing a book about it. There's a thread over in Navy (which is not really where it should be since the vessel was Army and only chartered at that - it's a civilian steamer)

There were (3) different passenger lists produced for that vessel:
Genl. Dodge - published Herald of the Union April 8 1865
Journalist - compiled Apr 6 1865; published NY Times April 14
F W Foster (ex US SC Wilmington) - published NY Times January 19 1866

Foster's is the least accurate - partly because he mistook the 60th Illinois (not on board) with the 56th Illinois (204 on board; 5 survived).

My research over the past 12 months has added some names and shows:

325 soldiers confirmed dead on Lyon
82 soldiers unconfirmed as on Lyon; but probably so
32 soldier names removed - not on Lyon at all
38 Soldier names added - not shown on any of the lists
(17 soldiers survived) includes 1 not on any of the lists; I Wilhite 56 Ill who may have been picked up by the schooner

1 crew died on Lyon (Captain)
2 crew names added; both died on Lyon but are not on any list
(8 survived)
Probably there are at least 10 names still missing, if not more.

Passengers
120 in total
13 names added - not on any list
(4 survivors)

So the death toll seems likely to be 526 souls plus the unknown crew members
