THIS DAY IN HISTORY, 1864. Longstreet is badly wounded by a friendly fire accident in the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia.

Longstreet, propped up against a tree and bleeding heavily but ever the soldier, beckoned members of his staff to lean close and in a whisper urged them to find General Lee and “tell him that the enemy were in utter rout, and if pressed, would all be his before night."

Longstreet returned to the Army of Northern Virginia in October but never recovered full function in his arm. He later referred to the incident as an "honest mistake."
