I know of him mostly from Rhea's To the North Anna River, mentioning his part in the successful defense of the Spotslyvania Line on May 17th.
 
In addition to his writing "The Memoirs of Robert E. Lee" Long also wrote 2 other manuscripts. The one comparing Andrew Jackson to Stonewall Jackson (Titled Old Hickory and Stonewall) was edited and published recently. The actual manuscript was just sold in 2015. The other about Long's personal army life remains unpublished.
