Lone Star Valor
Texans of the Blue & Gray at Gettysburg

Joe Owen

Soldiers from both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia settled in Texas after the Civil War. These Texans of the Blue and the Gray played a key role in the Gettysburg Campaign. Collected now for the first time in a single volume are these veterans' moving diary entries, personal letters, and local newspaper interviews.

"Lone Star Valor: Texans of the Blue and the Gray at Gettysburg," is the story of the OTHER soldiers rather than Hood's Texas Brigade who fought at Gettysburg and settled in Texas after the war. In "Lone Star Valor" there is ONLY one response by a soldier in Hood's Brigade - Quartermaster Sergeant J. B. Polley of the 4th Texas, who answers a criticism about him from a soldier in a Virginia Artillery Battery after the war.
There is no other story from a soldier in Hood's Texas Brigade in "Lone Star Valor." Soldiers who fought in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, North and South Carolina, and even from Texas (but not in Hood's Texas Brigade.) After the war, these soldiers settled in Texas and told their stories to newspapers, wrote letters to loved ones back home.
