If a person looks at the disaggregated manufacturing statistics for 1860, one has evidence of how much trouble the Confederacy was going to have operating railroads if the blockade was successful and the war lasted into 1863.
Considering that locomotives were meant to be rebuilt and replaced, or demoted into secondary routes, on a continuing basis, for the Confederacy to be cutoff from Philadelphia and Paterson, NJ for three years in 1862-1864, while the northern railroad system was upgrading rails, engines and cars, put the systems on harshly divergent trajectories.
