During the early part of August 1862, Oliver Morton, the governor of Indiana, assigned 26-year-old Eli Lilly the task of forming a new artillery battery. Lilly set about recruiting men for the battery in west-central Indiana near the town of Crawfords, Indiana. The new recruits arrived In Indianapolis just in time to unload the new six-inch Ordnance Rifles that arrived by train on August 30.
The next day the recruits were pressed into action to the load by hand, all of the batteries 6 guns, 12 limbers, 6 caissons, and all the items that the battery needed. That was a huge task to load all of that onto the waiting train cars. The battery's horses had not arrived as of yet. As soon as the train cars were loaded, the train headed to Jeffersonville, Indiana.
