Looks like a type of land mine to me....but not my specialty, just my opinion. Welcome aboard from 35 miles north of Gettysburg! I am sure you will get more opinions regarding your find.

Any idea where it was found? That is sometimes a clue. Not my specialty area though. Agree that it could some sort of land mine or a crude bomb-like thing.

What is on the bottom of it? Looks like it has "legs"---maybe a tripod base?

That is entirely possible! I guess just hoping for something war-oriented...particularly Civil War...it must be an affliction...

I agree it is definitely an earthenware pot--very likely ancient and a very nice find.
